How to Interact With Your Hairdresser and Get the Haircut or Hairstyle You Like

A bad haircut may be the worst thing you could bring home from a visit to a salon. Sometimes poor communication and understanding between you and your hairdresser contribute to this bad experience. You need to make sure that you let your hairdresser know and understand what you like. However, you also need to lend a listening ear and consider your hairdresser's ideas on what suits you best.

Here are some tips on how to speak to and interact with your hairdresser and get the haircut or hairstyle you've always wanted.

• See to it that your hairdresser touches and inspects your hair, checks the thickness or thinness before he grabs a pair of scissors. It is necessary that your hairdresser checks at the current look of your hair, checks out the growth patterns of your hair, and asks you how you style your hair at present time before he or she proceeds with cutting your hair.

• As much as possible, use the lingo of your hairdresser. There are terms that are exclusively used in hairdressing and there are words which mean a different thing when you are at a salon. Your hairdresser would appreciate it if you be more specific and descriptive. For example, when your hairdresser is currently working with your bangs, tell him or her if you prefer soft bangs or hard bangs. Say the things you do not like up front like "I do not like hard lines."

• Bring a photo of a haircut or hairstyle that you like. Sometimes this is the best and quickest option. Just hand in the photo to your hairdresser and he or she just needs to remake it with your hair.

• Remember that there is a huge difference between the words "shorter" and "short." Be extra careful in using such words, otherwise you would not get the right length you want and go home disappointed and irritated because your hair is way shorter than you expected. The best thing to do is to give a specific figure to your hairdresser. You can say, "Chop off no more than two inches." This way, your hairdresser would have a clear idea of how short you would want your hair or bangs to be.

• After elaborating the things you would want for your hair, ask your hairdresser nicely if you have conveyed your point clearly. However, you could also consider the ideas of your hairdresser and be open to his or her suggestions, besides he or she is expected to be good at determining what is best for clients.

How to Protect Your Hair From the Heat

Flat irons and curling irons have recently become standard in every woman's bathroom. If not straightened, many women blow dry their hair to get the look they want. However, heat can be very damaging to our loved locks. If not cared for properly over time, our hair can become dry and straw-like, we will see an abundance of split ends, or we can burn or damage the cuticle of our hair which is irreversible. But, how can we protect our strands from the heat?

Always remember to use a heat protectant. If using a flat or curling iron, spray the fluid into each portion of hair before applying heat. This task is tedious, but extremely important. A popular, inexpensive heat protectant is 425 Got2Be Guardian Angel and can be purchased at most stores and hair salons. Tip: Try only straightening or styling the top layer of your hair. This will cut down on time you spend using the heat protectant and also help to maintain the volume!

The less heat, the better. If you are going to be using a flat or curling iron, stay away from the blow dryer. Let your hair dry naturally. Also, use the lowest heat possible while straightening or curling. Higher heats can cause more damage and increase the possibility of burning your hair or damaging your hair cuticle.

If using a hair dryer, opt for one that is ionic. Hair stylists recommend that if you do not own an ionic hair dryer, simply use the "cool" setting on your current dryer. Ionic hair dryers use negative ions to break down water molecules in your hair. This results in faster drying time and the negative ions cancel out positive ions that are damaging to hair. The "cool" setting on your dryer is less harmful to your hair because it lacks the damaging heat that fries (and frizzes) your locks.

Use a leave-in conditioner or oil like Chi's Silk Infusion. The conditioner will restore moisture that was depleted during your heated-styling process. Two to four drops should do the trick! Applying an excessive amount will result in a "gunky" look that is shiny, but unnatural. Not to mention that if the oil gets on your face, it's like spraying Pam (Yes, the cooking spray) and asking for a pimple breakout!

Make sure to shampoo and condition your hair properly. Pay attention to ends of your hair as they are more easily depleted of moisture than the rest of the strand. If you have an oily scalp, concentrate on shampooing the scalp and conditioning the ends. Do as your hair stylist does in the salon: shampoo with hot water and rinse your conditioner with cold to close the cuticles (if you can!).

Use a hair mask at least once every two weeks. Tip: use your hair dryer to intensify the mask! The heat from your hair dryer will open the hair cuticle so that the mask can fully penetrate the strand. S Factor's "Serious" Conditioner with Sunflower Seed Oil is an excellent, thick mask that only requires three to five minutes of your time!

How to Lose Weight Without Starving Yourself

Unless you have an awesome metabolism, we all crave ways to shed unwanted weight without starving our growling tummies. I myself have a particularly sweet tooth. How do we lose the pounds without giving up the foods we love? Try the following.

Walk:
Take every opportunity to put some mileage on those legs! Walk at least one to three miles a day for six days out of the week. Your walk should take about an hour at the most. I've found it to be extremely fun to take a walk with a friend, but feel free to utilize a treadmill if you have one.

Some tips when walking:
- Always be sure to have good quality running shoes with plenty of room for your toes.
- Walk at a pace that's comfortable for you. The pace should be a little faster than your normal gait.
- Integrate fast walking or jogging for 30 seconds at a time.
- Keep your shoulders back and chin straight. Posture is important!
- Lengthen your stride to tone your inner and outer thighs more efficiently.
- Don't forget to stretch after your walk!

Work Outs:
Upon completing your walk utilize at least three of the following exercises to help tone your legs.

1. Thigh Raise - Lie face down with your arms crossed and supporting your head. Extend your legs straight out so that your feet are a few inches off of the ground. Bend your knees slightly while keeping them off of the ground. Hold in this position for at least 15 seconds. Slowly unbend your knees, lower your legs to the ground, and repeat at least once.

2. Leg Raise - Sit on the floor with your right knee bent and left leg fully extended. Lift you left leg up so that it is at least 6 inches off of the ground. Hold for five seconds and lower (with control). Do at least five reps for each leg.

3. Kick Backs - Get on your elbows and knees. Keep your back flat. Raise your left leg with your knee bent and heel pointed to the ceiling. Hold this position for five seconds then slowly lower your leg. Do five reps for each leg.

4. Leg Lifts - Stand and hold on to the back of a chair. Move one of your legs back at an angle with toes touching the floor. Raise this foot until your heel is at least 12 inches off of the floor. Hold this position for five seconds. Do at least 10 or more reps for each leg.

5. Sit on the Wall - Stand with your back against the wall. Slide down until your thighs and parallel to the floor. It should look like you are sitting in an imaginary chair. Hold for 30 seconds to two minutes. Repeat at least 3 times.

Eat Healthy
Many people count calories to help lose weight. While this is an effective strategy, what's left for those of us who aren't calorie calculators? Here are a few tips to help you lower your calorie intake without becoming obsessed with nutrition labels.

- Eat when you are hungry, do not starve yourself!! Those that starve themselves normally overeat when it's time for a meal.

- Drink lots of water and stay hydrated. Water helps you feel full, but should NOT replace any meals.

- Pick one unhealthy thing that you eat and steer clear from it. I have an unhealthy addiction to Oreos and have told myself that I will allow myself a cookie a day. (I've found that designating Sunday as Oreo Day is disastrous as I'll eat them nonstop.)

Sexy Halloween Costumes for Women: Getting Into Character

Are you looking for sexy Halloween costumes for women? Perhaps cute, creative or funny costumes are more up your alley? Even as adults, how fun is it to be going to a Halloween party! Dressing up and occasionally winning best costume awards is still fun and exciting even at my age. What about you?

Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays. As a child, we would decorate the house, my mom would think up the most original Halloween treat we would give out at our house that year. The kids lined up to trick or treat at our house despite the fact that our Mom made all the kids sing a French song... or they didn`t get their treat... and they wanted their treat.

My sister and I would daydream about which character we wanted to be at Halloween. Which costume, makeup and accessories would be best to imitate our hero or heroine? And how could we best get into the personality we were trying to be?

As an adult now, dressing up and going out for Halloween is still very important to me. I especially enjoy dressing up sexy to turn heads and feel like a vixen at least once a year in public... more often in the privacy of my bedroom... but that's another story! Halloween dances is my preferred activity on this special occasion as opposed to going out to the bars for Halloween.

Popular Ideas for Sexy Halloween Costumes for Women

  • Vampires
  • Fairies
  • Gypsies
  • Witches
  • Air Stewardess
  • Sexy Pirate
  • Cat Woman
  • Sexy Maid
  • Angel
  • Sexy Gangster

These costumes are some of the most popular sexy Halloween costumes for women for this year. Other perennial favorites include Marilyn Monroe, a nurse, an Egyptian princess, a sexy cop, Pocahontas, a cheerleader or a fire woman.

Whichever personality you decide to wear this Halloween, you will want to get into character. If possible, watch a movie, read a book, watch a YouTube about the character you are impersonating. Learn key expressions, accents, facial expressions or moves that your personality would do so that you can make your character more realistic. If you are dressing up as a famous singer like Lady Gaga or Katy Perry, you will want to listen to hit songs and memorize the words to certain songs so you can break out into song randomly throughout the night.

As a sexy Halloween vixen, you will no doubt be turning heads. Take advantage of this to win a costume contest at the adult dance or bar you attend. Practice your walk, practice your talk and hopefully your Halloween will finish in the bedroom with the lucky pirate, quarterback or vampire that gets to see you parade your character in the intimate surroundings of your bedroom.

Magazine History - A Brief Look at the Publications We Love

I don't know if there was ever a point in my life where I didn't love browsing through a good magazine. Back in the day, publications like BOP and Tiger Beat were my signature favorites; obsessing over pictures of Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Leonardo Dicaprio occupied a good deal of my time. Though I still thoroughly enjoy a great snapshot of these former teen heartthrobs from time to time, I've set my sights on the sort of reading materials that better correlate with my current age bracket. In my mid-twenties, I've replaced Tiger Beat with the glossy pages of fashion magazines, and the large poster sized images of JTT, with layouts of trendsetting items. It's so incredible to me that these magazines have inspired such a large audience to follow their advice on a month-to-month basis that I've decided to take a closer look at their publishing history.

Vogue
Believe it or not, Vogue magazine made its first debut all the way back in 1892. After switching ownership, the US based publication went international in the 1920's developing major success in countries like Spain, Great Britain, France and Italy. Vogue has featured prominent pop culture icons in the modelling such as Twiggy and Lauren Hutton. Today's editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour is an emblem of the fashion industry even having a fictionalized movie based on her lifestyle and work in "The Devil Wears Prada." If you've done the math correctly, this year marks Vogue's 120th anniversary.

Cosmopolitan
Cosmopolitan or as it is more commonly known "Cosmo," was founded in 1886 in the United States. It began as a family oriented magazine until around 1889 when it underwent new management transforming it into something more similar to a literary journal offering book reviews and fictional pieces by famous authors like Edith Wharton, Rudyard Kipling and Ambrose Bierce. Who knew? It wasn't until 1967 that then appointed editor-in-chief Helen Gurley moved the magazines focus away from literature and towards a new target audience of women. Gurley aimed to focus on sexual issues, a still relatively taboo area of American culture. Then it was very controversial, today however it is one of the nation's leading magazines in fashion health, beauty and relationships.

Elle
Though not nearly as old as Vogue or Cosmopolitan, Elle was founded in France in 1945. It wasn't until the 1980's that the magazine made its transatlantic journey to the United States. It was only a matter of time until Elle became one of the largest and most widespread magazine company's of all time with 42 international editions. Their readership is calculated to be at 4.8 million and their websites averaging 26 million page views per month.

InStyle
With a circulation of 1.7 million, you'd be surprised to know InStyle has only been around since 1991. Though it is relatively young, the magazine has made some pretty impressive and bold moves in order to standout amongst its competitors. Instyle has been among the first few to have musical artists and actors grace their cover pages in lieu of models. They also offer a celebrity home section to their magazines in addition to other areas that include fashion, beauty, health, entertaining, home and charities.

Why Should You Wear Custom Handmade Jewelry?

While there is always the option of buying and wearing jewelry that is mass produced, having pieces that are handmade and customized to your tastes is a much better choice. Custom handmade jewelry does cost a little more, but the benefits more than justify the expense. Here are a few reasons why you should work with a professional jewelry designer and have pieces created that will better reflect your taste in styles.

You will have something unique

One of the main advantages of owning custom handmade jewelry is that no one else in the world has that same piece. This means that wherever you go, your jewelry will be unique. If you are the type of person who likes to follow the beat of your own drum, it is important that your jewelry be in line with your own sense of creativity and style.

Having unique pieces is also a lot of fun. The pieces can be great icebreakers in social situations, providing the basis for conversation with new acquaintances. This can be especially helpful if you are a little shy and need a way to get comfortable with people you are meeting for the first time. Invariably, someone will comment on the workmanship of the brooch, necklace or ring that you are wearing and pave the way for the conversation to continue.

The right piece for any occasion

Finding the right jewelry for a certain occasion can be nerve wracking. After wading through all the mass-produced pieces on the market, you may not find anything that is perfect for the event or what you plan on wearing. With custom pieces, you don't have this problem.

Assuming you have enough advance notice, it is relatively easy to work with a custom jeweler and come up with a design that is ideal for your needs. The right designer can help bring your ideas to life, including helping you select the right stones, metals for the settings and other elements of the finished design. As a result, you will have jewelry that is specifically designed for the event and for the outfit you have chosen for the occasion.

Jewelry as an investment

Another factor to consider is that high quality custom pieces tend to appreciate in value over the years. This means that the entire time you are having a lot of fun wearing those pieces, they are becoming more valuable. From this perspective, custom jewelry is not just about being unique or looking great. It is also about creating a collection of pieces that provide a degree of financial security.

At some point in the future, you may find it necessary to sell some of your custom collection. The good news is that since the pieces are unlike anything else on the market, there is a good chance you can command high prices for them. This is especially true if you selected the stones and metals for the pieces with care.

Custom jewelry can be for everyday wear or for special occasions. You may want to have special pieces for certain holidays or pieces that relate to your religious tradition. Whatever the case, the right designer can help you refine your ideas and make them a reality. From there, you can enjoy wearing the pieces for many years to come.
