Vanity Loves Women and Stilettos

Women and shoes are inseparable, a notion that's universally known, more so over the last 10 years. Thanks to Hollywood's Carrie Bradshaw from "Sex & the City", more women today have become in tune with their shoes. And among the many types and designs, stilettos have definitely made a very strong fashion come-back. Pre-CB (or Carrie Bradshaw), heels would normally be three or three and half inches high. Post-CB, the higher the better; most of the time, the heels are at least four inches high and you can find women, regardless of age, strutting in public in these pointed shoes.

Gone are the days when stilettos were only worn by exotic dancers, models on the runways or celebrities. In today's world, you can find college students wearing these spiked heels to classes; you can see these shoes becoming part of office attire.

These shoes are a culture in today's fashion. It's a must have fashion product; most of the time, one can find at least a pair in the closet.

The popularity of this spiked heeled footwear among women is undeniable. It was reported that the sales of shoes have gone up compared to the sales of other items despite the ongoing economic crisis with stilettos emerging as the bestselling product.

The fact that some stilettos are uncomfortable and painful (due to the sharp pointed heels and the shoe design) have yet to deter women from buying them. Foot fracture, back pain, blisters and bunionectomy (apparently Victoria Beckham had it and that it was so bad that she had to go for a surgery!!) are among the many hazards associated with these spiked heels footwear. In spite of this proven danger, they remain highly desired by the female population.

Vanity plays a major role in making stilettos in vogue among the womenfolk. Painful as they are, women associate these heels with being sexy and attractive and looking exotic and foxy and you can certainly see why. Shoe designers have claimed that the stilettos with their sharp pointing heels are designed to make one look slim and sexy. They assert that the very high heeled designs will make the legs look lean and long and when a woman wears them, the shoes will form as an extension of the legs and thus making them look longer. And who else would know this better but the designer themselves.

It is also said that this type of footwear has positive psychological effects on women who wear them. Accordingly wearing stilettos improves the self-confidence level. Apparently when you put on a pair of these torturous shoes, the body, including the butt, will be lifted up whilst the back will be arched, resulting in a sexy posture. Vanity in the works... confidence level goes up, feminine power is exuded and the strutting begins.

So where will stilettos be in closets of the future? Looking at this shoe style's raging popularity, it's safe to say that these shoes will always have a place in the closets of image-conscious women. Despite the proven agony of wearing them, vanity will ensure their place in a woman's heart and closet.

How To Wash A Sweater And Cardigan At Home?

Sweaters and cardigans are quite common, and are a fashionable way to keep you warm. The best thing about these is that they can never go out of fashion. So, it is important to take due care. Another reason to give extra care is that pure woolen sweaters and cardigans are very expensive.

Why wash differently?

If you wash a sweater or cardigan like normal clothes, it will ruin them. If you wash it in a washing machine or even rub it with your hands, the sweater will de-shape and will shrink to a great degree.

Some people also have a misconception, that like human hair they will come back to normal after drying so they put them in the dryer for this purpose. This in turn ruins the sweater even more; the threads turn furry and end up resembling a fur ball.

Step by step guide to wash sweater, or cardigan

With such a sensitive material like wool, it is important that it is washed properly. To help you out, here is a step by step guide to wash these:

• Materials: The first thing that you should do is to collect all the items and set aside so that everything can be done without any necessary delay. The items that you will need are a small tub, hot and cold water, a basket with holes like a normal laundry basket, a mild detergent and two towels.

• Preparation: Take the tub and pour cold water in it, and after doing so add a mild detergent in it and mix it well. Using hot water or a strong detergent can damage the sweater. Then place the basket in the tub in such a way that it is not completely submerged, and can be lifted easily.

• Soak: After everything is ready, take a sweater or a cardigan. Do not wash more than one at the same time, as their color might leak and rub off on the other. Close all the buttons and zippers of the sweater. You can also fold it for better care. Then, gently soak the sweater in the water; as doing it quickly might make the water flow out of the tub. Besides, this will not allow the material to absorb the detergent.

• Rinse: After leaving it for 5 to 10 minutes in the water, when you are sure that it has completely absorbed it, take the basket out. Then, place it in a basket of clean water and repeat it till the water comes out clean.

• Towel dry: After it has been properly rinsed, lay down a towel on a flat surface. Spread the sweater or cardigan out on it, and cover it with another dry towel. Leave it for about two to three days.

• Air dry: Then, lift it and place it in open air covered with a towel until completely dry.

These steps will help you a lot to wash your winter cloths.

A Nod to Tradition in the Form of Jewelry

The Jewish culture is one of the most substantial in terms of history and tradition. Stretching from the earliest days of civilization, the Jewish people and their culture have been a significant part of society. To this day, marks of the Jewish tradition are still very evident in pop culture and in society as a whole. Jewish cuisine is highly popular and Jewish celebrations are also very prevalent all over the world. The descendants of this culture are showing no signs of slowing down and they figure to make even more of an impact in the coming years. Judaica jewelry for instance, is just another way for this culture to show up in society.

Jewelry is another long-running staple of society. The Egyptians wore all sorts of jewelry over their bodies and to this day, people still accessorize with several pieces of jewelry albeit in a less pronounced manner. Jewelry is an incredibly versatile form of accessory. It is the only type of accessory that can be worn all over the body and there is no real limit to the amount of it that can be worn. People have used necklaces and chokers to adorn the upper half of the body, while they have used rings and bracelets to beautify the arms and hands. Judaica jewelry is similarly versatile and its designs are highly symbolic of the Jewish heritage.

Arguably the most popular form of Judaica jewelry is the Star of David. The highly recognizable star has a distinct appearance that allows it to be a dramatic addition to any look. The Star of David is typically worn as a necklace and is always prominently displayed. Hamsa jewelry has also climbed in popularity over the years. This type of Jewish jewelry is elegant in appearance and it also has a superstitious belief attached to it. Bearers of Hamsa jewelry are believed to have better luck since this particular item is also believed to ward of the evil eye. Judaica jewelry can also be born from a very straightforward concept as shown by Chai jewelry. Chai equates to life in Jewish culture and it is also widely seen as a good luck charm.

Kabbalah has grown in recent years, and it is no surprise that forms of jewelry featuring influences of Kabbalah have also become more popular. This particular type of Judaica jewelry draws from several sectors of the Jewish way of life and it makes the accessories from this line even more diverse and beautiful.

How Important Is Comfort When Choosing a Fashion Shoe?

I am a person who loves shoe shopping. Anything that catches my eye, I want it. That means that I have a cupboard full of fashion shoes and I only wear a handful of them. Not because I don't like them, I don't feel comfortable in them. I have made the conscious decision to purchase fashion shoes that look stunning and are comfortable. Is that really possible?

When I scan my cupboard for a shoe to match my outfit, I find many fashion shoes that will look great with my ensemble but I cannot bear to wear some of them. They simply hurt my feet and I cannot walk on them all day. I find that most of the time I'll wear a shoe that is comfortable. I want balance in terms of comfort meets style. I've also noticed that the shoes that hurt my feet the most are the cheaper ones. They are the ones that don't have the proper support in the soles and don't have sufficient cushioning. The next time I went shopping I looked for and felt for shoes that were suited to my feet. I looked at it and it looked lovely, then I tried it on. This time I was sure to try on both shoes and walk with them on. That way I get a better feel on the ball and arch of my foot. Now ladies, this is important, you must have sufficient padding under the ball of your foot. If it's not padded you could hurt your feet and get those unsightly bunions. Then your days of wearing sexy high heel shoes are out of the window. Also be sure to alternate between high heels and flat shoes from day to day, so that your feet get a rest and don't get used to one form of footwear. That's right, you need to also have some sexy flat footwear in your cupboard. Although, those flat shoes can also prove to be uncomfortable. Wearing flat shoes all day can affect your heels and the arches of your feet.

In my case, it is very important to focus on comfort when choosing a fashion shoe. The right pair of high heels or pumps shoes makes all the different to the general health of your foot. That doesn't mean you have to wear flat pumps only. No, as long as you have a regiment of alternating between your desired footwear (heels and flats) then you can experience a happy comfortable relationship with your fashionable footwear.

13 Personal Intentions Midlife Career Women Can Make to Replace Those Failed New Year's Resolutions

With January nearing an end, many of those New Year's resolutions we promised to make and keep have drifted slowly to the bottom of the never-ending "to do" pile that is our busy lives.

I've never been a fan of New Year's resolutions because in many ways they set you up for failure. Our intentions may be the best, but it's hard enough to make one major change in our lives, let alone the overwhelming number of holiday promises we make to ourselves under pressure or influence, or a looming end-of-the-year deadline, or an extra glass of Merlot.

Instead, I like to think in more positive terms about what it is I want 2013 to look and feel like. That means sitting down (or walking or whatever gets your mental juices flowing) and consciously deciding on the areas of your life you want to make the most impact on. And that impact doesn't have to be monumental. It can be subtle, barely perceptible shifts in the way you think, feel, act and plan.

To help facilitate this conscious exploration, here are 13 "thought-starters" for those of you who want a different way of approaching the next 11 months of the year (and beyond). Notice they're not resolutions, which usually focus on something we don't like about ourselves, but more nuanced, personal intentions based on thinking about ourselves and what we want in a much more positive and grateful way:

1. Because I want to make 2013 count, I...

2. Because the things that brought me joy in childhood still do, in 2013 I...

3. Because I listen to the whispers inside, in 2013 I...

4. Because fear of failure is no longer a good enough reason to not do it, in 2013 I...

5. Because simple pleasures are so meaningful, in 2013 I...

6. Because my body has served me so faithfully all these years, in 2013 I...

7. Because the world needs my service, in 2013 I...

8. Because of the amazing people who have loved me and made me who I am, in 2013 I...

9. Because I am willing to believe in the power of forgiveness, in 2013 I...

10. Because the silence has gone on long enough, in 2013 I...

11. Because I am so blessed, in 2013 I...

12. Because I vow to be more radical, in 2013 I...

13. Because I want, in the last days of my life, to remember this year with tears of gratitude, in 2013 I...

I encourage you to grab a journal and write your answers to these prompts. If you'd prefer, share your answers with someone you love, and listen to theirs. Perhaps make a pact to hold each other accountable to the answers.

It's important to go with your first instinct as you complete the statements. Let your intuition lead. If you're writing, keep the pen moving on the paper. Don't get stuck in "thinking about it" - for more analytical types (like me), this can be difficult, but it's important not to censor yourself.

Don't look for the "right" answer. You don't have to understand your answers right away. Some may feel surprising or totally foreign to you, but over time their meaning will emerge for you.

What Happens When A Woman Gets Into Her Flow?

I made the decision to venture out into the realm of what I didn't know, I didn't know about women, which was absolutely nothing at all. So I humbly and willingly placed myself at the very feet of the only experienced group of people who could, and would, honestly want to help me develop a vision of women that extents far beyond the reaches of a male dominated philosophy. Of course, it was women themselves. I became a dedicated and focused student of women in ways most men wouldn't dare dream of observing them. I watched and I observed how the nature of women, when they're in flow, seems to compel them to work to bring their families together and how harmony seems to be the overarching theme of their nature. Yet in spite of this internal urge to be in harmony with everything around them, I also observed women constantly struggling to achieve peace and harmony within their own minds. They often shared with me their struggle to get their mind to do what they've always wanted it to do, create harmony through out their entire life.

like any great student, I listened and I watched the natural flow of things among women when their language supported what they truly desired to experience. I saw how easy it was for them to get alone and work together, and then I noticed how the sudden appearance of resistance, no matter how small, immediately disrupted the flow. As I observed these dynamics unfold among group after group after group, I began to understand the nature of both flow and resistance. I observed how flow keeps women in harmony with everything around them and how resistance does just the opposite. As I observed the nature of flow in action, I noticed how flow manifested itself as a language directed by a definite purpose, and resistance manifested as a language void of any real purpose at all. In other words, those women in flow were intentional about their harmony. The women in resistance seem to only generate small, cheap and idle talk... Almost strictly for the entertainment of others. It was clear. The women in flow always spoke in alignment with their best possible outcome, never forsaking it. They were committed to living their best life, and those in resistance weren't. They were more focused on what they didn't want or what was wrong, as identifying what was wrong always seemed to come first. They'd profess to have a desire to experience certain positive realities in their lives, yet what they communicated aloud was totally contrary to achieving it. This was their normal functioning.

there was another distinction which became crystal clear to me the more intensely I studied; and, that distinction was this: those women in resistance tended to be totally unaware that they were in resistance, while those women in flow, were consciously aware that they were in harmony. This told me one thing... To get into flow and have your mind to do what you've always wanted it to do. You have to be intentional and definite. On the other hand, to be in resistance and remain unable to get your mind to do what you've always wanted it to do, all that is required of you is to remain unconscious... Remain uncommitted to a definite want or purpose.

Winter Tips for Keeping Your Skin Youthful

The air in winter is not only cold but dry and so can dry out skin. The top tip for keeping skin youthful during the winter is to keep it hydrated. Drying out not only leaves the skin feeling uncomfortable and itchy but can exacerbate conditions like eczema, a terribly itchy inflammation and rash of the skin. The radiator heat that seems a relief after coming in from a cold winter's day can dry the skin out even more.

People who are used to moisturizing the skin of their face will need a different sort of moisturizer for winter weather. In winter, the moisturizer should have an oil base because the oil sets up a layer on the skin that will lock in moisture. However, the person should be sure to buy an oil that doesn't clog the pores. These oils include mineral oil, avocado oil and almond oil. Vegetable shortening and the very popular shea butter shouldn't be used because they simply clog the pores. Skin lotions that have humectants can also be used, as humectants will attract moisture. Humectants are substances like glycerine and fruit acids.

A person should also make sure that his or her feet are moisturized. During the winter, petroleum jelly and glycerine are good for this. Dead skin should also be removed from the feet regularly. Dead skin blocks moisturizer.

The person should also be careful to put on sunscreen, for the sun is just as dangerous during the winter as it is during the summer. Indeed, thanks to the reflection of snow, it might be even more dangerous. A sunscreen of at least 30 SPF should be applied to the face or any other exposed areas of the body about a half an hour before a person goes outside, and then reapplied if the person is going to be outdoors for a long time. The hands especially need to be kept moisturized in cold, dry weather because the skin on them is thinner than the skin on the face. Putting on gloves is a good idea if a person needs to go out into the cold. However, the gloves shouldn't get wet. Wet gloves cause the skin to split and itch and might even worsen eczema. Socks should also stay dry.

A humidifier is also a good thing to have in the home, as their task is to inject moisture into the air in the form of a soothing mist. The ideal way to humidify a home or office is to put small humidifiers all through the building.

People should also avoid subjecting their skin to chemical peels or astringents during the winter, because these substances take oils out of the skin. Milk cleansers and alcohol-free toners are much better.

Very hot baths should also be avoided because, ironically, they're dehydrating. A person should enjoy a warm bath. The bath should last only for a few minutes, however. If the skin is itchy, a handful of oatmeal can be added to the water.

Top 10 Winter Care Tips

Dry, flaky, cracked and sensitive skin. Signs of winter skin. The cold air outside and warm/heated air indoors depletes the moisture of the skin. This causes cracking, dryness and flaking of the skin. If the winter is taking its toll on your skin, take these precautions to bring back that glow and luster.

How to Take Care of Skin in Winter

  1. Get a facial done - Whatever may be your skin type there will be a change in the skin as there is a change in the climate. A great way to start your winter season is by getting a good facial done. This will allow your cold weather skin-care routine to be more effective.

  2. Drink plenty of water - Many of us presume that we have to stay hydrated only in summer and not in winter. However this is a wrong notion. In winter we get more dehydrated. Therefore it is important to drink plenty of water, if you want to maintain a healthy skin.

  3. Use heavy cream or moisturizer - We use heavy coats and jackets to protect ourselves from the cold. Similarly, you have to give extra protection to your skin especially, in the areas where it is more exposed- face and hands by regularly massaging with heavy cream. This will keep the skin hydrated.

  4. Avoid using winter skin care and beauty products that contain petroleum - This will clog the pores on the skin making it hard for the moisture to seep in. Whether it is a lip balm or skin lotion check for the ingredients.

  5. Don't forget your sunscreen - Just because you're shivering does not mean that the sun's ray is hibernating. Using sunscreen is important even in winter. As in summer, ensure that you apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before you go out of your home.

  6. Instead of gel cleanser use cream cleanser - The astringent in gel cleanser will dry out and irritate winter skin. By using cream cleanser you can remove the facial makeup without depleting the skin of its moisture.

  7. Exfoliate regularly - To get glowing and lustrous skin in winter exfoliate regularly. Do it at least thrice a week. Exfoliation will remove the dead skin that has built up during the winter.

  8. Use hydrating serum - In summer due to humidity you do not require one. However, the dry winter air will make your skin look dull. Therefore, use a good hydrating serum before applying your regular moisturizer.

  9. Try using oils- Half an hour before you take a bath, apply either coconut, olive, avocado or almond oil and massage well. You will notice the skin absorbs the moisture from the oil leaving your skin silky soft after a soak in a tub of tepid water or warm water shower. Aromatic oil will also lift your spirits on a dreary winter day.

  10. Take care of your lips and body too - Take care of your lips and body too - The lips can get chapped, therefore use a good lip balm with sun protection formula. Whatever you do to your face, do it for your other parts of the body including legs and hands

Women and Their Shoes - Old Habit Justified By A New Trend

Life has many great mysteries one of which is this: Why do women need so many shoes?

Apparently, on average, a woman has about 20 pairs of shoes at one time. In extreme but not rare cases, some women (who are sometimes called shoe fetishists) own hundreds of pairs. Not exactly Imelda Marcos but still, alarming and very true! Men feel that such findings are preposterous, only because the same study reports that on average, men have 3 pairs of shoes at a time. One of life's many great mysteries? Definitely!!

Many have tried to understand and to explain this phenomenon. A bestselling author has even said that there is a deep and dark love relationship between a woman and her shoes, which explains this arcane need. Perhaps this is true but then again, maybe there is a simpler explanation. After all, shoes over the years have become more than just footwear.

We can see that shoes have redefined themselves by becoming more and more like an accessory to a woman. Shoes today are more than just a strap and sole and the only grouping that is done is based on comfort. Shoes nowadays have elaborate and beautiful designs, thanks to the number of shoe designers who have emerged and reaped huge success in the shoe industry over the years.

It can be said that the 21st century is the era of shoes. Manolo Blahnik, Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo, are among the many successful shoe designers who are synonymous with frightfully expensive designer footwear. These are the lots who, with the help of Hollywood, were responsible in revolutionizing the shoe industry. As a result, shoes today have become a sect within the fashion industry where their sole purpose, is to accessorize.

No more just an item for the feet, shoes are products of beauty worn to be showed off. Fancy footwear has become a craze among women, and even among some fashionable men. As an accessory, shoes are used to complement what a woman wears and a way for a woman to express her sense of fashion. Her style choice for the day directly affects her choice of hair styles, accessories, make up, handbags and of course, shoes. And this is another reason that has driven the need for women to purchase many types and designs of shoes. Simply said, woman buy shoes to accessorize. When one needs to accessorize, ones needs choice and hence, the average of 20 pairs in the closet. In a way this also explains the conclusion of a study conducted recently on the sales of shoes. It was said that they remain the same when compared to other items despite the looming recession.

Shoes, it seems, have become such an important accessory to a woman that not even the financial crisis can stop women from shoe-shopping. It is also because of this altered role that explains why 3 pairs of shoes are insufficient for a woman. And yet you wonder why there are so many shoes in the closet?

3 Stories Women Tell Themselves

Brenda is a bright, talented attractive woman. Unlike most of her friends from high school, she knew early in life what she wanted to do when she grew up. She wanted to go to college, get her accounting degree, work for a couple of accounting firms to get some experience and then be her own boss and open an accounting firm. She's been working for six years and this firm now, opening her own office is a lot harder than she thought it would be. A management position has opened up and Brenda would like to talk to her boss about a promotion but she is terrified. For every valid qualification Brenda for the promotion, she tells herself a hundred stories of why she can't.

We all tell ourselves negative stories. Stories about why we can't,or shouldn't or will fail trying.

Here are three common stories women tell ourselves.

I don't have what it takes but she does

Each of us are born with our own gifts, talents and natural aptitudes. You can make a fish walk like a bear. Having said that your natural abilities account for around 10% of what you are truly capable. The rest of it is mindset, or better said what you tell yourself you are capable of. 'She' is just as talented, just as capable as you are. You are as likely to succeed as she is. The difference between the two is the story we tell ourselves every day. In order to reinvent yourself, you've got to tell yourself a new story.

Timing is not right I'll do it later.

Once again this myth is based on a partial truth.

Timing is important but there's a lot to be said about just jumping in and getting started. Especially if you're doing something for the first time. Of course you'll make mistakes no matter how much research and planning you do but there is a great wealth in hands-on experience.

If I succeed they'll talk about me.

They might. I wish I could say that everyone will be supportive, that they'll be so inspired that they will ask for your help reinventing themselves too. Some will and you will treasure them when they do. Unfortunately most will not and some will go out of their way to say mean and hurtful thing about you, about what you do and how you got to wherever you are at. That's life, that's their story. They live and believe that the god shined on you alone. You know that's just not true, it takes a lot of work and determination. I invite you to choose friends that share your determination and vision. Surround yourself with people who are uplifting to be around. Be uplifting to be around. Be positive, share your story and let the naysayers go. Every good story deserves a great audience.

January Birthstone, the Garnet

What are birthstones? Birthstones are related to ones birthday or gemstone. Birthstone or gemstone is something personal to a person. It represents their birth; each birthstone shows the qualities that symbolize the month. Birthstones were discovered by a Jewish historian Josephus. He found a connection with 12 gemstones that represented each of the Gregorian calendar months relating to the Zodiac signs. Wearing the significant stones on the birth month started in the 1500's. Popular poetic sayings came with each description of the stone. For example:

"By her who in this month (January) is born No gem save garnets should be worn;

They will ensure her constancy, True friendship, and fidelity." Wikipedia 2012

The January birthstone is the garnet. The garnet comes in many colors: browns, red, pink, blue, purple, orange, yellow, green, black, and even colorless. The rarest garnet is the blue garnet, and only been found in Madagascar in the early 1990's, but since then been found in United States, Kenya, Russia, and Turkey. The blue garnet is breath-taking because it changes colors in the sunlight to different shades of blues to greens to purples.

When talking about the garnet as a birthstone, it's always been the red garnet. The word garnet means "seed" resembling a pomegranate seed, because of its deep red tones. The red garnet now comes from the great resources of Africa, Sri Lanka, and India.

The garnet is a precious stone that holds many qualities of strength, endure, prosperity, and health. If a person is born on this month he/she most likely holds these qualities. Also the gemstone itself is hard not easily broken (like a diamond), durable, but still holds a tremendous amount of beauty in all its splendid colors.

Other than the blue garnet; garnets are not scarce to come by, so many do not value them as much as other precious gemstones. They have a low reputation because of the abundance of the stone, and it's sold at much lower price than a diamond. The garnet is mostly associated with the color red, especially when it comes to the birthstone of January. The garnet comes many different shapes and sizes, add to art jewelry as rings, pendants, earrings, and other types of jewelry. Fashion Pond has a very beautiful garnet contemporary ring. The stone is perched on 14 carat gold the middle of engraved sterling silver jewelry garden of flowers. It's delightfully playful ring that sure will make conversation when seen.

Tired of Sounding Like a Child (And You Are Over 21)?

A problem many women experience is hearing themselves on some form or recording equipment and discovering that they sound like a teenager or worse yet, a child. Unfortunately, if this is the case with you, then what you are hearing on your voice mail or answering machine is exactly how everyone else recognizes you. Having a voice that is childlike does not instill confidence in your listeners and it would be to your advantage to make your voice an asset instead of a liability.

Everyone has a better voice inside of them. And that better voice sounds more mature. It does not sound too old or too young. It is ageless. In fact, it will continue to improve as you age even after you have discovered that everything else in or on your body is starting to decline! (Generally this happens after 40.)

Finding your more mature sound means changing the way you produce voiced sound. It is not complicated but is actually rather simple to do. And once it happens, you will be amazed at the difference in the quality of your voice. Your goal then is to make it a habit. When I made the change with my voice while in graduate school, I knew I wanted to keep that lower, richer, warmer sound so I used it as much as possible throughout my day.

One of the best tools for making it a habit is the telephone. If you answer a phone at work or at home, using your new voice every time you answer your cell or your phone will make the process that much easier.

One man with whom I worked was a taxi dispatcher. He answered the phone at work about 600 times a day. This young man made his new voice a habit very, very quickly because of the nature of his job. Most of us are not answering a telephone that many times a day but if you can get into the habit of thinking about your voice whenever you open your mouth to speak, it will become a habit and you will not have to think about it.

You project an image certainly by means of your face, your clothes, your figure, your hair and every other visual aspect of your being. So too, however, do you project an image when you speak. Your visual image may be an asset but if you sound like a child, your visual image becomes much less compelling. Discover your more mature sound and your vocal image will no longer be a liability.

Nature's Beauty "Amber"

Amber is a beautiful yellowish, brown stone from the fossilized tree resin (some call sap but Amber is not), of the Baltic states of Eastern Europe. Because amber is a tree resin; it's soft, sticky substance often animals or plants get stuck, and when amber hardens these are called inclusions. These inclusions are what make the stone its beauty.

You can only find quality amber in Poland, Latvia, and parts of Russia. The Amber stone is a very delicate yet tough stone used often in jewelry. Amber is art jewelry with all its different tones of browns, yellows, and orange colors radiating out. Literally, when the sun cascades over the stone, it brings out amazing earthy brilliance. Amber is also used as ingredient to perfumes, and in past was used to heal in medicines.

The Amber stone is a very old stone; it has been around since the 1400's. The word amber comes from the Arabic word anbar , Latin ambar, and old French ambre which means solid, waxy substance. The Greek named Amber which means, "Formed by the sun". According to Greek mythology Helios was God, son of God Phaeton was killed, his sisters mourned over his death, and their tears formed into Amber.

Many types of amber come from many different sides of the world, but the earthy, brown amber comes from the Baltic seas. The Baltic trade has traded with Europe for over 2,000 years before North America ever existed. It's special to have a piece of amber as art jewelry, because how it was formed, because of its inclusions that might hold a spider or twig. It holds beauty of nature. There are many different tones, and colors of amber, but the rarest is jet black.

Amber is found for thousands of years, and even to this day along the coast of the Baltic Sea. It has been for the Russian and Polish, a very lucrative trade. The polish craftsmanship is known for their designs of this delicate stone. Amber is now mostly made for jewelry. This delicate stone is cherished throughout the world. Many jewelry artists are very creative with the stone, creating amazing necklaces, bracelets, big earrings, and exotic rings. It's hard not to create wild, and contemporary jewelry with the amber.

Healers feel amber is healing because warm, earthy colors, but also, its process which it is formed. So, amber is not just a stone you wear; it's also something that can heal you, and bring you balance. So, the next time you wear amber, remember that it has a healing power that calms the soul, and touch of history. Amber is a fossilized stone that the earth naturally made for you to wear.

How to Avoid Wedding Debt Problems

According to recent surveys, the average couple spends $29,583 to have a wedding in Canada. With such a high price tag for the wedding it's no wonder so many couples start the new lives off with a lack of financial stability. With financial issues being one of the leading causes of divorce, this can put unnecessary strain on a new relationship. With that in mind is the perfect wedding really worth starting your new lives together with a mountain of debt or is wedding debt getting in the way of wedded bliss?

If you're concerned that the high price tag for your wedding will lead to financial hardship during the first months of your marriage, you should consider if a dream wedding is really worth a long-term financial burden. Fighting over financial issues can spell disaster for a new marriage, so why put yourself into that kind of position as a new couple? If your dream wedding is not worth the risk, you need to take steps to reduce wedding costs to avoid problems with debt at the beginning of your marriage.

Start by looking at the time and place you plan on holding your wedding, since these two factors can mean the difference between a reasonably priced wedding and an expensive wedding. Holding the ceremony at off times of the year, week or even the time of day can help save you money on almost every aspect of the wedding. It also helps you save money on the reception. For instance, if you hold a wedding early in the day, you can save big on food and drinks for your reception with a brunch or lunch reception instead of a dinner. Fall or winter weddings are almost always less expensive than spring or summer weddings. As for place, if you can either find a friend or family member with a big backyard, or hold the ceremony and reception at the same place, you can save money as well.

Following time and place, reducing cost on your wedding plans is really just a matter of figuring out what you can and can't live without for your nuptials. For some tech-savvy couples, printed wedding invitations may not be a big deal. You can skip printed invitations and send e-vites to your guests. For other consumers, they can live without having a perfectly matched wedding party, so they allow the bridal party to choose and wear their own dresses.

Make sure to keep a running total of your costs and adjust the numbers as needed. If you can't cut enough costs by giving up parts of the wedding that don't really matter to you, then the only solution left is to reduce your guest list. Reducing the number of guests reduces your total costs, so you can have a more extravagant ceremony in front of less people. Just make sure that you calculate how big of an impact your reduced guest list number will have on the final total for your wedding budget.

Once you have said "I do" you should start making plans to pay off your wedding debt. Research options for debt consolidation that allow you to combine your outstanding wedding debts into one low monthly payment. This helps you avoid financial hardship where you have to juggle bills and struggle to make ends meet in the first few months of your marriage. If you need to consolidate and you're not sure which option you should use, contact a not-for-profit credit counselling agency to speak with a trained credit counsellor about your situation.

Finding The Right Photographer As a New Model

Information for anyone thinking about or just starting a career in the modeling industry. It's a very basic start to portfolio building and finding a photographer to work with.

Becoming a model in the fashion industry is the dream of many young women and more than a handful of great looking guys as well. But because the idea of making it into the top-level of modeling in the industry is so enticing, there is so much competition for those few top slots that turn models into the world's "super models."

When you are just starting, the challenge can be finding the perfect photographer who can help you build your portfolio. You need a portfolio that shows you at your very best to get your portfolio noticed by the agencies. This can get you the paying modeling gigs for fashion magazines and commercials.

The first consideration is your location. Do you live in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Milan, Miami or one of the other major fashion epicenters?

There, you will find some of the top photographers who have already made the contacts and networks that they need to get your portfolio to the main decision makers in the industry. If you don't live in any of these cities, don't despair.

You have a few ways to resolve this problem of your "out-of-the-way" location.

The first one is to learn as much as you can about the fashion industry, so that you know who the key players are. Then you can network with the photographers that you do know, they may be able to introduce to some of their network and contacts. This could be the first step to getting your portfolio noticed. This can be a daunting task if you don't have insider information.

The second but equally important way is to also network with other models you may know who have been in the business for a while. Using online resources to connect with models can help you head in the right direction. Talking with models that have had "somewhat" success in the industry is a great place to start.

If there are no photographers in your town or local area that understand the fashion industry to your satisfaction, then traveling to a major city may be your only option to find the right photographer. Please don't compromise your values on this. Just because a photographer is "well-connected". This is not always enough for a photographer to be qualified to help produce your portfolio.

Some tips on choosing the right photographer for you:

  • The photographer has to know his equipment. Talk with him or her and discuss the types of images you want to see achieved for your portfolio. They should be able to discuss with you how they will achieve the particular "look" that you are looking for. They should be able to show you examples of how they have created images in the past.

  • The photographer should have a good eye for the style you want, lighting, and composition of your shots. Look at their portfolios, so you can see that they know how to get the types of images for your shoot. Get references and endorsements from other models who have worked with them. You need to be confident that once the photo shoot gets started, you are in good hands.

The most important thing is, you have to feel confident with your photographer. Having images taken is a very personal event. Photo shoots can get long and difficult. My fashion shoots range anywhere from a few hours to an all day affair, especially if everyone is having fun and creating amazing images. Perfection is always hard work. The most important thing to come from these shots is your personality. This is going help to break you through the rest of the portfolios and get you noticed. If your photographer can pull that from you, they can take you all the way to achieving your goals and success in the modeling industry.

Essential Winter-Wear for Early 2013

As we say goodbye to the year 2012, and ring in the year 2013 with a celebratory toast, and as chillier and chillier weather continues to descend all over the world this side of the equator, it's time for fashionistas everywhere to take stock of their closets and re-up with the proper winter apparel accordingly. It doesn't take a degree from a fashion design college to know that there are certain weather-appropriate items that one MUST add to their wardrobe in order to leave their homes and face the wrath of a brutally cold winter day. However, the nuances of fashion trends certainly vary from season to season. That's why on the brink of this new year, we consulted with our very own fashion college experts and put together a short list of the season's most essential winter-wear. Trust us... you WON'T want to miss these tips...

1. Boots to brave the elements. They will save you from slipping and face-planting on snow and ice. They will save the bottoms of your favorite jeans from getting ripped and soaked by snow and rain. They will save your toes from having to be amputated due to hypothermia! This season (like most winter seasons) you absolutely MUST equip your feet with a pair of sturdy, rubber-soled winter boots, preferably waterproof ones that won't get ruined by wet weather or salt stains.

2. The infinity scarf. They don't have to match the rest of your outfit. They don't have to be super fancy or expensive. In fact, one of these could even be easily homemade if you or somebody you know knows how to knit. Fashion college students all over are dying for infinity scarves this season. Infinity scarves are like regular scarves except they do not have ends. Instead, they are defined by their never-ending circle, and by the fact that they keep their owners extra cozy and NEVER FALL OFF YOUR NECK.

3. A thick, wool coat. This winter, wool coats will not only keep you super warm, but they are SUPER STYLISH too! Whether you choose a classic color like black, gray or navy, or you branch out with a brighter, dyed wool to make more of a bold fashion statement, everyone should know by now that nothing keeps you warmer than wool. In fact, you might want to pick up some wool socks to match!

4. A snuggly, cashmere sweater. OK, OK, so cashmere can get a little bit on the expensive side... However, if you own a cashmere sweater already then you know how good of an investment these can be. Not only does it not get any warmer or cozier than cashmere when it comes to sweaters, but if you take good care of yours, it will certainly last you a lifetime, and it will never, EVER go out of style. Whether you choose a crew-neck, v-neck or cable-knit, you will certainly not regret this cozy winter apparel purchase.

These items that our fashion school experts have collected and listed above are certainly essential when it comes to much-needed winter-wear this season. If you are full of even more ideas, consider a future in fashion design!

Is Being Good, Good Enough?

Is being Good, in itself, Enough?

Your partner is off to a party. You are concerned, a little afraid, that they may be seduced into a liaison, however brief. Should this infidelity come to pass, you feel your relationship would be over. That is where you would draw the line.

"Why create a stink, over something that has not yet happened, or indeed, may not happen"? - you tell yourself. You bypass the "nuclear" button, flicking the "warning shot across the bows" switch instead. During your parting hug, you whisper, "please be good"! "Don't worry", is the carefree response, and off they go to the party.

Fate, plays its hand

Your partner returns in the wee hours but this is nothing untoward. The red sky in the morning, is, by itself, not a cause for concern. The story resumes at a time that is too late to call breakfast, but too early to call lunch. You take your seats at the table. It is crunch time.

After a quick glance at the bolognese, you conclude it will be better not to mince your words. "Were you unfaithful last night?"

"No I wasn't". The negative response, which provided much needed relief, was only momentary. The response, though legally and technically correct, did not follow the spirit of the law. When that spirit is laid bare, you are left, in contrast, trembling with shock and anger. The devil, truly is, in the detail.

Does the End, Excuse the Means?

You learn that your partner was not the seduction target, but the source. Nothing happened. True. In fact, nothing happened twice.

The shenanigans could be nonchalantly described as being but a whisker away, a hair's breadth, from actually happening. Nothing was notched up, menos mal. Call it what you will, the absence of any kiss and tell fabric, could be pot luck, the grace of God, even fate playing its hand.

All's Well that Ends Well!

Shakespeare said, "all's well that ends well". The above demonstrates that this is not necessarily always the case. A good ending, does not mean we set out with good intentions. Neither does it mean that we "carried ourselves", we behaved, in a proper manner. This middle part, carrying ourselves, can be best illustrated, by the creeping up game.

The Creeping Up Game

This Creeping Up Game, is one that children the world over enjoy. Let us flesh out how the game is played.

One player stands facing a wall. The other players stand behind a line some distance away. They try to creep up and touch the wall. The player facing the wall can turn round at any time. Any player seen moving must return to the base line. The first player to reach the wall takes the place of the player against the wall, and the game begins again.

The creeping up game is clearly not all cloak and daggers. But its darker side is about disguising intent. You shouldn't be caught moving forward. Nor is it just about luck. Those who are good at the game will be good at predicting when the player "at the wall" is going to turn around.

Creeping Up is Creepy

If you've been joining the dots, you'll have associated the creeping up game with the "pulling" game, which is the game of finding a partner. Both games penalize creepy behavior! So you do not want to get spotted moving forward. To win, in either game, you need to get to the one who is "not looking", before someone else does.

Sum Up the Narrative of Being Good

Why not sum up, our short narrative of being good.

  1. a happy ending does not imply that there is nothing to be sad about
  2. "to begin well" or to have good intent is as important as ending well
  3. cloak and dagger antics can over-shadow intent, "good" or otherwise

We need to begin with good intentions. We need the execution to be "good at heart". Just as important, we need the outcome, when all is said and done, to be good!

Good. A function of people and time

Listen out for the oft repeated narrative. "Be good". "Have you been good"? "Were you good today"? "Good" is presented as a function of a person and time. She was not good yesterday. Begin to think of "being good", as a function of three (3) key things.

  1. First think of "good", as a function of a person's intent.
  2. Second consider whether the "execution", of intent, was "good".
  3. Third, "good", is a function of the outcome. Did it end "good"?

Different Types Of Fashion Jewelry

Fashion jewelry has many trends, which are updated regularly. But, you can select the jewelry only if you know the different types. So, for your help various types of fashion jewelry are described here.

• Handmade jewelry: Hand crafted jewelry has become very popular because of different styles, and it's made of a combination of stones and beads. Such jewelry looks original compared to the rest of the types. A variety of the materials are used, hence you can wear it with any outfit. Moreover, you can also use simple pieces, creating a delicate look. Today, beads and stones are mostly used in bracelets and necklaces, including colors as blue and brown.

When Should You Wear High Heel Shoes?

If you are a shoe lover as much as I am, you probably have over a dozen stunning high shoes in your cupboard. However, when is it really appropriate for you to wear a pair of high heel shoes?

I've seen women wear high heels on many occasions while they sacrifice the comfort of their feet. I find that there are only certain occasions and events to which you should wear your sexy high heel shoes. There are certain places you shouldn't wear them to. Here is my list of places which are either appropriate or inappropriate.

Appropriate occasions for wearing high heel shoes.

  1. A Dinner Date: If you are going out on a date with a gentleman, especially if it's the first date, you can put on your sexy shoes. You will appear to him as a confident lady. This is a quality many men admire in a woman. Better yet, you'll be seated most of the time so your feet won't get hurt.

  2. A Wedding: Receiving an invitation to a wedding is an honour. With wedding costs skyrocketing, couples are compelled to invite selected guests only. If you are the lucky recipient of a wedding invitation, you need to look the part. Weddings are occasions usually celebrated in style where guests are required to be dressed formally. When you choose your elegant evening dress you can certainly put on a pair of sophisticated high heel evening shoes to complement your dress.

  3. Year End Functions: If you are going to a year-end function or any corporate function for that matter you need to look powerful and professional. A woman wearing a beautiful pair of high heels indicates to her colleagues that she is confident, strong and determined. Furthermore, while you are mingling and moving around, you'll find that the shoes are actually quite comfortable and manageable.

Inappropriate occasions for wearing high heel shoes.

  1. The Shopping Mall: We all love to get attention but getting attention at a shopping mall is not good. Shoppers tend to gawk and criticise ladies who wear high shoes in malls. Furthermore, high heels are not made for walking long distances and you could easily walk 5km in a mall. I don't know about you but I'm not going to walk 5km in my heels. Why should I put myself through that pain?

  2. Travelling: When you are travelling by plane or train, you'll have lots of luggage that you'll need to lug around. Yes, I know there are trolleys but there are some areas that you can't use them and you still have to lift your bags. The extra weight of the bags could hurt your ankles. So consider your feet the next time you travel.

I hope I have given you some insight in the world of fashion shoes. High heels are a girl's best friend but only when you wear them at the right time.

The Definition of Being a Woman

Even in these turbulent times, being born as a woman is a blessing. God has blessed the woman to create life, nurture it and love it. What does being a woman essentially mean? Every word in this article is a cliché yet true. Being a woman entails being a human being who has to carry the load of all relationships on her fragile yet strong shoulders, who has to shoulder responsibilities and when that is not enough be the one to sacrifice!

What does it mean? It means that a woman is the backbone and strength of all life, she is the one who keeps her family rock solid and bound together, the one who brings joy to a parent, is the soul mate to her partner, the inspiration for others and well, the apple in the Adam's eye!

A woman, first and foremost is a daughter, the joy of parent's youth and the helping hand in the dusk of their life. A daughter is the twinkling light in the eyes of the mother, the sense of feeling to the touch of the father and the support in their legs. An Irish proverb very well says, 'a son is a son till he takes him a wife, a daughter is a daughter all of her life!'

A woman then graduates to being a lover and a wife. A woman who is the best confidante of her husband, the friend to her husband, a guide and philosopher in bad times, a shoulder to cry on, the romance in his life and a hand to hold always. Being a wife is probably the most difficult role play of being a woman.

Then comes that role of being a woman which is the essence of being born as a woman, being a MOTHER! A woman keeps the life and humanity flowing. She gives birth to, nurtures, cares for and raises another human being. She bathes in the glow of pregnancy, endures the pain of childbirth, the joys of motherhood and the agony of letting go of the baby. A mother is a woman reborn and it won't be exaggerating in the least to say that a woman was created to recreate life.

In between these major roles, a woman keeps swaying between minor but as important roles of being a sister, a friend, a teacher and a care giver. Definition of a woman quintessentially means to be able to smile through tears, feel joy through pain, touch lives through compassion, spread love and life, give strength to weak and shine out through bleakness.

In the end it would suffice to quote Eleanor Roosevelt "A woman is like a tea bag- you can't tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water."

The Best Kind of Shower Filter Fits Your Budget

The best shower filter has a scientifically designed, disposable unit using 2 stage technology. Two stages are necessary in the process to filter out the many chemicals and compounds in tap water and to restore a healthy pH factor. It sounds like a budget buster, but an American manufacturer has made it affordable.

The research necessary to develop high quality water and shower filters is an expensive process. And it is an ongoing process as more decay of natural elements and pharmaceuticals are entering our water supply daily.

American manufacturing plants now have the ability to produce the highest quality water filters at a price that easily fit our budgets. In fact, if you now buy bottled water, you will save money by having an efficient filter on your kitchen tap. You will also help to slow the amount of plastic in landfills.

Shower filters used to be considered a luxury. The cosmetic benefit of removing chlorine before it dries out your hair and skin was a big selling point. Now we know that inhalation of chlorine gas is inevitable while you shower. Chlorine vaporizes in the warm water that leaves your traditional shower head. The bathroom door is usually closed affecting the air quality in the room. Red rimmed, stinging eyes or itchy skin are visible examples.

Shower filter sales have soared as people have realized the health and cosmetic benefit of using a disposable, recyclable filter on a daily basis. The initial cost is under $70. This includes the new massage type shower head plus the filter which will last for 6 months or 10,000 gallons. A single person can use the same filter for about 8 months. By that time, it will be full of nasty stuff and you will be happy to replace it.

Keep a replacement filter in your home and know that it is not a big deal to change to a fresh filter. You do not need to hire a plumber. Simple instructions are included. The replacement filters cost in about $45 and give you great piece of mind.

One positive thing about tougher economic times is that everyone is forced to review their spending habits. It's a chance to consider each expenditure to see if it meets the test of enhancing your health and long term happiness. Clean, healthy water in your home for drinking and bathing is a basic budget item.

The bonus you receive of healthier skin and hair makes the best shower filter budget friendly.

Help For Birthmothers And Adoptive Parents In South Carolina

If you are planning on adopting a child or putting a child up for adoption in the state of South Carolina, there are a few key things that you should know. There are government programs available to help you no matter what your situation may require. Whether you need help caring for the child you adopted, are looking for a child to adopt, or are looking for a family to adopt your child; there are many options and opportunities available to you.

Families or parents looking to adopt should check out the South Carolina Department of Social Services website. This website allows you to browse through a list of adoptable children in South Carolina. There is also the ability to search for specific children with search options such as gender, the number of children in a group for adoption, and race. This website also has a list of all of the regional offices which includes the contact information for these offices. You can also call the number 1-888-227-3487, to learn more about adoption and the children available.

The regional adoption offices of South Carolina also provide services such as adoptive parent training to those who are looking to adopt. These offices may also help adoptive parents with any problems they may have regarding the adoption process. There are also services provided by the state government that qualify adoptive parents for financial assistance. In order for you to receive this assistance, the child you adopt must be special needs. South Carolina has its own definition of what qualifies a special needs child; this can be found atthe child welfare website. The maximum payment is $1500 and these payments begin at the time of the adoption placement.

If you are looking to put your child up for adoption, you may have a couple questions about your rights while going through this complicated process. You have the ability to choose the adoptive parents, you can change your mind any time before the legal consents to adoption are signed or even after they have been signed if you have the support of the court, you may negotiate with the adoptive parents, or you can even choose to be anonymous throughout the process. If you still have more questions, you can visit the "iiat" website.

Adoptionhelp.org is a website that is available to help both parents looking to adopt and those looking to put a child up for adoption. They offer services to birthmothers such as online anonymous chats with professional and a help line for those who have questions about the adoption process. This website will help you to decide what options are right for you with regard to adoption and will help you through the process. All of these resources are available for free in order to make the adoption process as smooth as possible for both birthmothers and adoptive families.

Women's Rights - Are We Doing Enough Globally?

It is important for those of us in the US, the only nation in the world that can legitimately be called a super power, to understand the culture of other nations and not impede on their need for self-governance. That's the right way to play it. After all, no country wants another telling it how to live, what to believe in, or how to carry out its affairs, not the US or any nation. Obviously, you can see that point right? Still, where do we draw the line on human rights?

And in case you've previously considered all this from an intellectual standpoint, that is to say that the term and concept of human rights was merely made up one day, and in reality does not exist, still, I'd like you to consider the challenges of women's rights in some nations, or the lack thereof. Not long ago, I was discussing all this with in a diplomatic connotation with an acquaintance of mine.

Now then, with regards to women's rights, and their bodies, well, when I see the enslavement of women around the world, I just can't see why that should be allowed to continue on planet earth. Of course, in the Middle East women have been put into that situation for so long, they actually know no other way, and would fight against you to free them. Scary thought. But with education it could be done, perhaps why their male counter parts in those regions don't want them to become educated.

Religions around the world have been a challenge, and when it comes to fundamentalism in any religion, well it often causes bizarre behaviors, and is more often than not used as a mechanism for control. In the US we value the freedom of religion, and yet, when it goes against what we consider to be human rights, or women's rights, those are two very different concepts to try to marry and negotiate. Where do we draw that line? We must not tell other nations who to carry out their own affairs, and yet, when we see cruelty or rules against freedom, surely every American cringes at the thought.

So, let me as the question which is also the title of this article once again; "Are we doing enough globally when it comes to the rights of women?" Indeed, I'd say the answer is no, no we aren't and yet, I also worry about the repercussions of forcing our culture and will onto others, even if we are doing it for the right reasons. Well, I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.

What Should You Do If Bras Constrict Your Breathing?

Some women feel that the upper part of their body and their breathing is constricted every time they wear a bra. It feels as if they can't breathe, or it is very difficult to breathe. But still, they wear one, because they have to. It could either be because they have too small breasts that need to be pushed up, or their busts are large that needs strong support. However, if it is a problem about breathing whenever you wear a bra, it is highly probable that your bra does not properly fit you. If the band is too tight around your body, and the cup size is too small for your busts, you can feel that tightness to be constricting your breathe.

So how should you remedy this problem? What should you do if your bras constrict your breathing? If you ask some women, you will perhaps be advised to use adhesive bra. It is a bra type that you only need to stick on your front without losing the support that your breasts need. The adhesive bra provides flawless coverage. It can easily be applied and can also be removed without pain.

But if you ask the experts they will recommend that you be professionally be fitted. A majority of women just settle on what seems comfortable to their bodies, because they don't know actually what size is their bra. You know, getting accurate results when your body and cup size is measured is very important. Consult a professionally trained bra fitter. You can find many of them in most high-end bra boutiques and they can help you ensure maximum support and great fit.

When you wear a bra that does not properly fit, you may experience more than just discomfort. You can have poor posture, back and shoulder strain, and hardness of breathing. Additionally, your outfit would not look as good as they would in a properly fitting bra. Take the time to be fitted; 15 minutes is all that it takes, but you can reap the results for a lifetime.

You must realize that if your body shape and size change, so does your bra. If you have lost or gained weight in the past year, and still continue to wear the same bra that you used before the body change, you will end up being uncomfortable and experiencing some breathing problems (if you gained weight). A new bra fitting done by a professional can help end the common practice of women wearing unflattering and ill-fitting bras.

Gender Bias

Whenever there is a preference for, or a prejudice against, one sex over the other, the resulting state of affairs is referred to as 'gender bias'. Gender bias is reflected in unequal treatment generally, and more specifically in employment opportunities, as for example, in inequality of pay, promotion prospects, benefits, and privileges due to attitudes based on gender alone. Examples may be found in recent litigation in most countries of the West under Equal Opportunities or Human Rights law. Sexism is the continuing belief in traditional stereotypical gender roles often expressed as discrimination against the female sex in a patriarchal society. Gender bias and sexism impacts adversely on scientific inquiry, women's aspirations in the workplace and leads to gender violence. Increased public awareness through continuing exposure to the issues should help in a reversal of attitudes towards gender bias and sexism.

Women's subordination to men over the previous centuries was ascribed to their innate inferiority. This is well documented by Virginia Woolf (1929) in her extended essay on 'women and fiction' published under the title 'A Room of One's Own'. Two days spent in the British Museum Library allowed her to catalogue a plethora of baseless accounts of the 'Mental, Moral, and Physical Inferiority of Women', all written by men. She cites Prof. George Trevelyan, the eminent historian, to reveal the subservient conditions and dire poverty under which women lived in Elizabethan England. Women had no choice in who to marry, as the decision was entirely up to the men. Wife beating was common and the accepted norm, according to Prof. Trevelyan.

In the 17th and 18th centuries science was declared to be solely a masculine pursuit. Prof. Robert Boyle and other members of the Royal Society embodied the characteristics of autonomous, rational, disinterested, and mathematically proficient masculinity. It took the Industrial Revolution and two World Wars to see women contributing equally competently in practically all areas of human knowledge and enter learned professions. A feminist approach to science, for example, recently began to unearth masculine gender biases in fields like Archaeology and Embryology. As more women entered the field of archaeology, assumptions that feminine activities, like basket weaving were archaeologically inaccessible, as these were perishable, were proved wrong. Continuing research shows that gender differences are not 'hardwired' in the embryonic brain. Upbringing, cultural and parental expectations have a far greater influence than genetics (Eliot, 2009). Unless more and more women enter scientific fields of research such as embryology, gender bias will continue to be an obstacle to scientific progress.

An unsavoury aspect of sexism manifests itself in violence against women, especially in a domestic setting. In Spain, the government has been very active in seeking to redress this unwholesome state of affairs. Spain has a free, centralized confidential helpline to combat domestic violence incidents. It enacted The Gender Violence (Comprehensive Protection Measures) Act (Fundamental Law) 2004 (stet). The legal definition is: Gender violence comprises all acts of physical and psychological violence, including attacks against sexual freedom, or the arbitrary privation of freedom exerted against women by someone who is or has been, a spouse or with whom they have been linked by similar emotional relationships with or without cohabitation (Leader, 2011). Similar legal measures in most developed countries are designed to curb sexism manifested in violence against women.

Although there is now legislation to discourage discrimination at the place of work, the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development reports that in almost all OECD countries, including the United States, these laws have been ineffective and difficult to enforce. Overall, women appear to have 20% less chance of getting a job than men, and on average women are paid 17% less than men for exactly the same type of work. The OECD estimates that 8% of the variation in gender wage gaps is due to discriminatory practices in the labour market (OECD, 2008). In the USA, until the first Equal Pay Act [US Code, Section 206 (d)] was passed in 1963, female full-time workers earned only 58.9% of male earnings. More recent figures are somewhat better with women reportedly earning 77% as much as male full-time workers (OECD, 2002). But, there is still a gap.

Another area of concern under sex bias and sexism is the phenomenon known as the 'glass ceiling'. Regardless of their qualifications and achievements, more often than not, women are overlooked when filling vacancies in the upper rungs of the corporate ladder. This seems strange these days when in most developed countries and even in less developed countries, the head of state (prime minister or president) happens to be, or recently have been, a woman. Examples include: Sri Lanka, Israel, India, Germany, UK, Denmark, Argentina and Australia. The metaphor 'glass ceiling' came into use because there appear to be powerful, prestigious and highest paid corporate jobs with invisible barriers through which, women can see these positions, but are unable to reach them. They appear to face hurdles that are not there for men. That the 'glass ceiling' is a distinctively gender phenomenon is proven when US researchers found it limiting opportunities for both white and Afro-American women, but not for Afro-American men.

Anti-discrimination measures must increasingly take cognizance of homosexuals, lesbians, transsexuals and even transvestites who demonstrably are in a minority. Equality of opportunity must encompass them all. Resolution of problems in this area will neither be easy nor amenable to quick fixes. Bringing these issues into the public arena will help ameliorate the situation in the long run. Suggested solutions include raising awareness of sex bias and sexism from infancy at school using role play, engaging grass roots organizations and the local community, and campaigning employers to provide a family friendly workplace where women are enabled to combine work with childcare.

Areas where sex bias and sexism still exist have been referred to in this essay. That a massive improvement in women's conditions has occurred in recent times cannot be denied. Legislation over the years has helped in this transformation, but it is change in public attitudes and awareness as outlined in the previous paragraph that would ensure a level playing field both for men and women in the future.

The Key to Effortlessly Dressing Like a Chic Parisian - Black Stockings

These are like a reinvention of the little black dress (LBT), with an edge on it. Below is a step by step guide on how to use this subtle accessory to have a huge impact on your fashion style.

'Très facile', Keep it simple - As glamorous as it may seem to layer, add and accessorise, a real fashionista would know that minimalism is the key to being classic and edgy. This means toned down colours, straight-line cuts and most important is to keep the make-up simple and natural. The 50 denier opaque black stockings are captivating enough on their own to be paired with these basic items and bring it across as sultry yet elegant, an appropriate look for the avant-garde woman of the 21st century.

Attention to detail - Following from the minimal theme, the lack of overdressing clothes and cluttering with unnecessary accessories will then allow one to pay 'attention to detail'. For instance, a girly, floral print dress can be enhanced with a pair of opaque stockings to create a feminine yet versatile look. Because these stockings give a subtle look and leave the rest to the imagination, they are enough to add a bit of flirty playfulness to any outfit. The problem is being too concerned with layers of clothing and accessories, which takes away the focus from the finer details, such as the style of stockings that would suit a particular dress or outfit. The light touches create a greater impact on the outfit as a whole and add the correct balance of class and sensuality to any outfit.

Adapt and change - Rather than always thinking about the sophisticated side of these sultry black stockings you can also use them to add the feminine touch to a more casual or relaxed outfit. Make a cute statement when you pair them up with a short denim skirt, with rips and a pair of flats. This adds spunk to the outfit as it is balanced out well with the right mixture of roughness and elegance. The perfect nude baggy jumper can also be brought out with these as it adds fullness to the top part of the body, leaving the legs looking sleek and dainty. This shows how the opaque stockings can be adapted to a variation of outfits, such as the contrasting straight line office dress, but still adds a touch of sophistication to any outfit.

Now that we have been through the sequence of how these effeminate black stockings can add a luxurious feeling to any outfit, it is important to be able to maintain them well. The Levante Suede Matte 50 Denier Stockings are soft but strong, as they do no tear easily. Because they have a high denier, they will keep you warm during the winter months, when one may normally be hesitant to wearing stockings due to the lack of warmth that normally comes with them, in comparison to tights.

Fabulous Party Hairstyles Ideas

Christmas and New Year parties are not the only times you need an excuse to get creative with your hair. Party hairstyles are great for so many different occasions; dates, dinner with friends or a Sex and the City inspired evening out sipping cocktails. I have put together two simple styling ideas and tips to get you taming your locks pronto.

Party Hairstyle For Long Hair-The Romantic Chignon

If you love Taylor Swifts romantic style or have a wardrobe full of chiffon floaty tops and dresses, then this updo hairstyle is perfect for you and always looks catwalk ready with minimal effort. Literally, this only takes a few minutes. The key thing to remember is not to be too neat; you're creating a loose updo.

What You Need-
-Comb
-Hairspray
-Hair pins
-A thin elastic hairband

How To Create A Romantic Chignon-
-Create a centre parting and separate all of your hair into two even sections.
-Twist the side sections of your hair round that usually frame your face so that all of your hair is loosely pulled back eg: Start at the root, take two small sections of hair, twist them round one another each time grabbing an extra piece of hair as you go so all of the hair framing your face is entwined on each side until you look like you have two bunchies. Secure into a low ponytail if you aren't very confident at styling your hair.
-Separate the ponytail into two sections (or use the two sections you still have remaining) and twist these round one another so you look like you have a long twisted ponytail.

As you would when styling a bun, wrap your twisted ponytail round itself keeping it low until you have created your chignon. It may be easier to pin this as you go along using hair pins rather than kirby grips. A great tip if you don't want to see lots of hair pins poking out of your chignon, is that once you have secured them in place, fold the ends over one another. This will both secure your hair further and keep your hair looking natural.

Tip: If you want to muss up the look a little more you can run your fingers up and down the twirled sections of hair adding a little hairspray for texture so you are gently backcombing your hair with your fingers. This is less damaging than using a comb and also adds a little edge to this look

Party Hairstyle For Short Hair-Roackabilly Quiff - This is the perfect party hairstyle for all you rock chicks out there. Forget about carefully structured and pinned quiffs, this is all about being loose and wild adding height to your hair yet keeping in theme with romanticism by adding a little soft wave. This look is great teamed with smoky eyes or rocking up an elegant dress. If you want to add some glitz then why not invest in some glitter hairspray?

What You Need-
-Pastiche brush or comb
-Small/thin tongs
-Hairspray
-Serum

How To Create A Rockabilly Quiff-
-Make sure you have already dried your hair.
-Part your hair to the side (whichever side suits you best).
-Add some serum to your hair to help with texture ensuring you smooth down the edges of your hair because it is only the quiff we want to add height to.
-Part the entire middle top section of your hair. Take a small section from the back and clip the rest out of your way.
-Brush this section away from your parting. Roll your tongs around this section of your hair (so you are rolling it back towards the parting). Hold in place so the entire section heats throughout and then release the tongs.
-Repeat this for the full section of hair until it is all complete (you may look a little like a poodle at the moment but don't worry).
-Using your fingers, brush all of your hair back weaving your fingers through the curls softening them. You want to pull this straight back whilst you are brushing your hair back and not towards your parting.
-Add texture using a pastiche brush or comb by backcombing sections of your hair from the top, not underneath for a change.
-Using your fingers, position the hair so the front section is slightly quiffed but mainly has height.
-Secure with hairspray to finish.

Tip: Don't aim for perfection, this style is meant to look a little messy on top so is great if you aren't great at mastering those sleek immaculate finishes. If you want to punk it up a bit get some hair mascara and had some vibrant colours to it.

Skills I Learned From the Miss America Program

A Piece of Me: Skills I Learned from the Miss America Program

Commitment is essential when trying to obtain any goal. I was fortunate enough to compete in the Miss Montana/Miss America Pageant. Though I did not win the state title, I did come away with life skills that I have been paying forward ever since. Understanding the program's value, I was able to utilize many of my acquired skills while managing and counseling at top weight-loss clinics and centers. The centers and clinics I worked for extended this knowledge with schooling and practical experiences.

Good fortune allowed me to attend conferences put on by Glamour magazine; attend workshops with Dr. Covert Bailey, author of Fit-or-Fat; attend Diet Center's Nutrition and Behavioral Modification School; and participate in continuing education courses and workshops by Dr. Wayne Dyer, author and visionary. The knowledge I gained from these experiences has taught me much about commitment.

Preparing for Miss Montana/Miss America requires huge commitment from its contestants. It also demands a great deal of personal responsibility, sincere humility, knowledge, loyalty, and sincerity. The program also teaches that there is always room for improvement, along with the essential need for preparation and hard work. These are some skills I was able to pass on to a group of juvenile girls in Portland, Oregon.

One of my clients was having difficulty reaching these girls. The more we talked, the more we learned about one another. After sharing some of my childhood and teenage experiences with her, she became convinced that I was the one that could reach these girls. Her goal was to persuade them to attend school and graduate. I realized that the girls thought she didn't understand their situation. She had no clue where they were coming from. She asked me to meet with them, and I agreed.

In just a few short minutes, we bonded. We connected. They knew I wasn't going to fill them with a bunch of BS and listened intently as I talked to them with a completely open heart. The intense conversations that followed my speech prompted tears and sighs of relief. Someone understood! They knew truth!

Realizing the girls trusted me, I challenged them to each make a commitment. This commitment required that they attend school and graduate. It demanded that each of them give their best because they needed this for their futures, for their future children's futures. After persuading the girls to sign the contracts, I placed the contracts in a folder and handed them to the client who arranged the meeting. Because follow-up is vital, we continued to meet until I moved back to Montana. The next year, I received a beautiful card announcing that all but one of the eleven girls graduated from high school; some were attending vocational schools while others chose college.

The point is that these girls had to make a personal commitment in order achieve their goals. They worked through their adversities in order to meet their goals. Just as Miss Montana/Miss America and life experiences have taught the power of commitment and follow-through, it also reinforced gratitude. The importance of gratitude should never be understated. I recall coming to this conclusion as a young child.
