Abuse On The Reservation

Hi everyone:

It has been a while since I have written an article. But I feel the show I watched the other night needs to be shared with everyone. I watched a documentary about how Native American Women are being brutalized on the reservations. And virtually nothing is being done about it. Native American Women are being beaten and raped daily. If they come forward to try to get help all that happens is retaliation from the families of the perpetrator and his friends. Not only them but sometimes and more often than not from the victims very family members as well. Police officers are over-whelmed. There are only a few police officers to patrol a vast area. Because the Native American's have their own constitution, they do not fall into the jurisdiction of the state police. This has to be addressed by the Federal Government. Nothing of any consequence is being done on this level One Native American male told the interviewer that they would get the girl drunk and a group of his friends would take turns raping her. As he was talking about it, he had a great big smile in his face, and proceeded to say if the girl came forward to report it he or some of his friends would beat her. I don't know if this upsets you, but it sure does me.

As a survivor of domestic violence and sexual assault, and an advocate I find this to be totally appalling. What can be done, awareness. To many women suffer in silence. I speak out and I hope you will to. This needs to be addressed. The cycle of abuse has to stop somewhere. If not the cycle will continue through generations. If a boy see's his Mom being abused the chances are he will also become an abuser, as well if a girl grows up in an abusive home life and see's her Mom being abused she is likely to gravitate towards abusive men in her adult life, or even as a teen.

Where do these women go to. This is the issue for many women. It is easy for someone to say just leave, but it is not that easy. Native American women are poor and rely on their families for their daily support. This is the case for other women as well. Awareness is our tool for some hope. We need to take a stand and not turn a blind eye anymore. The silence needs to stop. Our voices have to be heard, for the voices that cannot be heard.
