You know those models prancing down the runway wearing those absolutely gorgeous clothes? Man, I would love to look like that all of the time! (All ninety-five pounds of them) But I spend my days doing something entirely different then they do. While they are waking up at five a.m. to get in the hair and makeup seat for their photo shoot, I am waking up at five a.m. to feed my eleven month old son and get my nine year old ready to catch the bus for school. And, while they are spending their nights partying at some posh nightclub in New York or Paris, I'm going to bed at nine exhausted thinking about doing it all over again tomorrow.
With my life the way it is now, even if I could afford the clothes the models wear, it's just not practical. (Could you just see me... wearing a beautiful floor length, sheer number with my hair piled on top of my head, smokey eyes, and six-inch heels, pushing my son in the cart around the grocery store wiping spit up off the front of me yelling at my oldest to 'Please, put that back!') It just wouldn't work.
I know that there are a lot of you just like me. Let's not give up yet, girls. There's still hope. There's still no reason that we have to look like a totally slob either. I've found out that with the right accessories and a good pair of jeans, I can look just as put together as one of the celebrities I see on television. I don't mean that you have to rhinestone it up everywhere you go, but a unique bracelet or a nice pair of earrings can go a long way. For someone like me, someone on a budget, costume jewelry is the way to go.
Costume jewelry, sometimes called fashion jewelry, is jewelry that is made up of non precious metals sometimes silver or gold-plated and often set with imitation or semi-precious stones. You will see a lot of costume jewelry made with copper, enamel and alloy also. They are not pieces that will go up in value over time, but I find that they are very valuable to me. They are fun to collect. You can mix and match them. And most of the pieces can go from casual to elegant easily. Surprisingly, most people don't even seem to notice that my jewelry isn't real. I get compliments all of the time on my pieces.
You can find costume jewelry just about everywhere. I tend to stay away from the malls because they usually sell a lot of common pieces that everyone is wearing. I want something more unique, but that still keeps up with the trends. I get a lot of my jewelry online because I can find things that's aren't as common. But, I also love looking through antique shops, yard sales, and flea markets for good finds.
There are many ways to look more put together. Instead of just that same old pony tail on a day where you are rushed, think pretty hair clip or headband. Let's get creative, ladies. I dare you to just try it. Buy a funky bracelet and a slim headband. Wear a pair of jeans and the old t-shirt you love (and wear a lot!) You can't tell me, looking in the mirror, that doesn't look even a little better. You're going to start feeling better about yourself, and you'll love the compliments. Life's too short for sweatpants, anywhere other than the gym.
